St. Augustine's Square boasts a quiet and tastefully designed environment, surrounded by well-known buildings, including St. Augustine's Church, Dom Pedro V Theatre, St. Joseph's Seminary and Sir Robert Ho Tung Library, etc. The road surface, paved with wave-patterned mosaic of gravel, takes on a unique style. Dom Pedro V Theatre was built in 1860, has magnificent and elegant features in the neo-classic Greek renaissance style. It is the first Western-style theatre in China and was also the venue for the Portuguese to hold important celebrations.
St. Augustine's Church was originally built in 1586 by Augustinian friars from the Italian Roman Catholic Church . In 1825, it was rebuilt with its present magnificent profile. It is one of three oldest churches in Macau.
Sir Robert Ho Tung Library, built before 1894, is the former residence for Ho Tung, a merchant prince from Hong Kong, for his summer holiday in Macau. The three-story building, with gardens in front and behind, integrates both South European and Chinese designs.
